Search installation

March 07 - April 26, 2008

Philadelphia, PA- Gallery Joe is pleased to announce a show of drawings by Christine Hiebert. Search is Hiebert’s third solo show at Gallery Joe. The exhibition opens on March 7 and runs through April 26, 2008.

Search is an intimate show consisting of five large charcoal drawings on paper pinned directly to the walls of the Vault Gallery. Hiebert sees drawing as an ongoing exploration of the line based on the understanding that making marks gives rise to visual thought and discovery. Here, we see her search for balance between the highly articulated line and uncertain space, between control and freedom, between cohesion and chaos.

Hiebert has exhibited widely both in the US and abroad, most recently in Live/Work: Performance into Drawing, Museum of Modern Art, New York. She is known for both her drawings on paper as well as her temporary blue tape wall drawings, which have appeared on the walls of institutions such as the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany, The Drawing Center, New York, and Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, IL among others.

Hiebert’s work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, University of California, Los Angeles, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick, ME, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge, MA, Weatherspoon Art Gallery, University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT.

Born in Basel Switzerland, Hiebert grew up in Philadelphia. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

The artist will be present at a reception on Friday, March 7, from 6:00 - 8:30 P.M. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12 - 5:30, other days by appointment. For additional information call 215.592.7752 or Also see our website at
