Marilyn Holsing’s La Vraie Histoire de Jeune Marie at Gallery Joe

Philadelphia, PA. Gallery Joe is pleased to present Marilyn Holsing’s first solo exhibition at the gallery, La Vraie Histoire de Jeune Marie. Translated as “The True History of Young Marie,” the series focuses on the fantastic and imagined tales of the young Marie Antoinette. The show opens November 2 in the Vault Gallery and runs concurrently with Rob Matthew’s Knoxville Girl.

Marilyn Holsing transforms the Vault Gallery into the boudoir of Marie Antoinette. Filled with embroidered benches, toile drapery, and ornate fixtures, the viewer imagines being transported back to Versailles, France in the 18th century. Amidst this fantastical setting Holsing exhibits seventeen drawings, starring the young Marie Antoinette. Deeply rooted in exquisite narratives, her drawings feature small vignettes situated in pastoral settings while the young Marie Antoinette performs curious and enchanting activities.

Currently, Holsing’s drawings can be seen in Magical Realism at the Abington Art Center in Jenkintown, PA. Recent exhibitions include Art on Paper 2006 at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC, Melanee Cooper Gallery in Chicago, and the Philadelphia International Airport. She is the recipient of grants from the Leeway Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Her work is also included in several prominent collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Marilyn Holsing lives and works in Philadelphia.

La Vraie Histoire de Jeune Marie opens in the Vault Gallery on November 2 and runs through December 15, 2007. There is a reception for the artist on First Friday, November 2, 6:30 – 8:30. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12 – 5:30 and other days by appointment.
