Accrescere - Group Show of Drawings

Accrescere - 3 artists at Gallery Joe

Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe offers another view of drawings this month in the Front Gallery. Accrescere opens on Saturday, January 31, 2004. Three artists will participate in this show. They are: Teo Gonzalez, John Morris, and Laurie Reid. All of the artists are new to the gallery. This show will run concurrently with a show of sculpture in the Vault Gallery by Dino Pelliccia. Both shows will run through March 13, 2004. There will be an opening reception for the artists on First Friday, February 6 from 6:30 – 8:30.

Accrescere is Latin for accretion and is defined as; the process of growth or enlargement, organic growth, continued development from within, as well as, the increase by external addition or accumulation. All three artists in this show make drawings through the thoughtful accretion of discrete dots or marks. In the case of Teo Gonzalez, the order and placement of each dot is highly prescribed while Laurie Reid’s marks are more ambiguous, inviting the viewer to question the process. In John Morris’ drawings each mark is a response to the one made before. The drawings seem to grow across the page creating tiny microcosms.

Teo Gonzalez will show four new drawings from his first series using color. Deep blues and greens serve as the background for dots in red and black creating subtle color shifts. Gonzalez’s strict use of the grid creates a structure for his dots. Born in Zaragoza, Spain, 1960, Gonzalez grew up and attended college in Spain, moving to the US in the early nineties. In 1997 he received his BA from California State University at Bakersfield, graduating magna cum laude. Gonzalez has exhibited widely in the US and Spain. He shows with Brian Gross in San Francisco, and Cristinerose/Josee Bienvenu Gallery in New York. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

John Morris will show five drawings. There will be a range of works in the show dating from 1995 to 2003. Morris works on his drawings over extended periods of time, often putting the drawings aside for long periods. “The drawings are seductively pictorial, spinning out biomorphic minutiae and galactic ellipses,” (Frances Richard, Art Forum, Dec. 2002). Morris’ drawings are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Morris lives and works in Queens NY. He shows in New York with D’Amelio Terras.

Laurie Reid will show five drawings. Several large white on white drawings for which she is known will be exhibited along with work from a new series using color. “…one can almost see the artist’s hand poised above the page, a drop falling, the tiny splash that leaves a dark ring of pigment at the dried droplet’s irregular edge,” (Harvest Henderson, The Oregonian, Aug. 2003). Reid’s drawings were included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial. Her work is in the collections of the San Jose Museum of Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Reid lives and works in Berkeley, CA. She shows in SF with Stephen Wirtz gallery.

Accrescere opens Saturday, January 31, 2004 and runs through March 13, 2004. There will be an opening reception on First Friday, February 7 from 6:30 - 8:30 P.M. Regular gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12 - 5:30, other days by appointment.
